Top 5 Reasons Your Wi-Fi Is Slow and How to Fix It

Fast and reliable internet is a necessity for most businesses. So much of the work everyone does these days is online that if you have internet issues, it can bog everything down.

One of the biggest problems I hear people complaining about: slow Wi-Fi. Nothing ruins your day like having tasks that typically take you seconds end up requiring minutes – or worse. You end up feeling like you’re not getting anything done!

Now, I have my own thoughts about using Wi-Fi versus hardline connections, but I’ll get to that later. There are a lot of good reasons why Wi-Fi is so popular, and it’s not going anywhere, so it’s important for people to know possible reasons their Wi-Fi is slow and learn some slow Wi-Fi solutions. Ready?

Why Your Wi-Fi Is Slower Than Molasses

Router Placement Matters

Where you put your router really matters for your Wi-Fi signal. If it’s hidden away in a corner or stuck behind your furniture, it will have a tough time reaching all the areas of your office.

When setting up your router, place it in a central location and elevate it. Also make sure to keep it away from walls and obstructions that could block the signal from reaching other rooms. Do this and you’ll maximize your Wi-Fi coverage.

Too Many Connected Devices

Each device connected to your network uses bandwidth. If you have multiple employee devices engaging in data-intensive tasks simultaneously, it can slow down your connection.

Make sure you have clear rules about who can connect to your Wi-Fi and how it should be used. Prioritize essential devices and consider upgrading your internet plan if you regularly exceed your bandwidth limits.

Interference from Other Devices

Other devices in your office, like phones, nearby Wi-Fi networks, and even things like the microwave in your kitchenette, can mess with the signal, leading to slower speeds.

Slow Wi-Fi Solution

Try to minimize any devices that may cause interference, and check your Wi-Fi channel on your router. Like rush-hour highways, Wi-Fi channels can get crowded. If you access your router’s settings, you can see which channels are most crowded and choose a less-used one.

Outdated Equipment

Using an older router can significantly impact your signal speed. Older routers typically have a limited memory and processing power, which leads to slower performance – especially when multiple devices are connected at once.

If your router is several years old, it might be time to consider an upgrade to a newer model that can better handle the needs of your office.

ISP Issues

Sometimes, the problem isn’t in your office at all. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may be experiencing issues or might not be providing the speeds you’re paying for.

Conduct a speed test to check your actual speeds against the speed you’re paying for. We like the free tool that is offered by SpeedTest as a quick and easy way to see if you are getting the right upload and download speeds from your provider.

If there’s a huge gap, contact your provider for help or consider switching to a provider with better service.

The Ultimate Slow Wi-Fi Solution: Ditch Wi-Fi

I know, I know, but hear me out.

There are many amazing things about Wi-Fi. The world is, in many ways, better and more connected because of it.

Unfortunately, speed and reliability are not two of those amazing things. If your business doesn’t have to operate using Wi-Fi, hardline connections are so, so much better. You will get faster speeds. You will experience fewer instances of internet slowdown or (gasp!) complete disconnection.

I know it’s not possible for everyone, but if you can switch to hardline connections for most of your internet needs, I promise you will notice the difference and be thrilled. Okay, coming down off my soapbox.

Regardless of whether you plug in to your internet, connect via Wi-Fi, or a combination of the two, internet problems won’t completely disappear. Having speed or connectivity issues? Book a consultation to talk about how we can help.
