What is Geofencing?

Many fleet managers use Geofencing to better track and protect their most valuable vehicles, assets, and employees to maximize GPS tracking technology. But what exactly is it, and how does it work? Geofencing is the practice of creating boundaries on a map around any desired area in our GPS management platform, anywhere in the world. When this feature is enabled, an alert is generated if a vehicle or asset enters or leaves the geofence boundary. We can then use the alert to send a text or email to one or multiple parties, letting them know if anything looks out of the ordinary and help them quickly determine if any action needs to be taken.

How does Geofencing work?

For example, let’s say that a CEO of a trucking company is having concerns about multiple drivers veering off of their designated routes to run an errand, meet a friend, or focus on anything other than the task at hand. Remember, the drivers are getting paid and are on company time, so the CEO expects them and counts on them to stick to the schedule. First, we work with the CEO or manager to set up the correct map perimeters in our tracking portal. These virtual “fences” can be any shape or size, which means they can specifically cover the entire route if needed. This is carefully done to prevent any unnecessary or false alerts from taking place. But when a vehicle does noticeably leave its assigned course, the boss gets the alert in real-time and can then reach out to the driver to ask for an explanation. This also sets good habits with the driver and helps the CEO stay in touch with them as their schedule is completed. The driver now knows that he/she is expected to stay on track, and check in as part of the job.

What are the benefits?

So what is in it for you and your business? Geofencing is such a simple concept, but it can be greatly expanded upon, creating an entire virtual system and process for all at the company to rely on. Imagine the results of such a system; more accurate timecard tracking, improved delivery times, no more wondering if assets are secure, and better customer service from start to finish. The possibilities are truly limitless. Instead of wasting valuable time and money trying to track a fleet yourself, you have peace of mind knowing that our system will do the lion’s share for you.
